What exactly are Idioms?

Simply said,

Idioms are phrases that don't mean what they literally say, but have meaning to native speakers.

Idioms are phrases and expressions where the actual meaning is different from the meaning we understand by just reading the words.

For example,

~costs an arm and a leg means very expensive.

And on top of the world means very happy.

Idioms can be used to add color to your writing. It should be avoided in formal writings because they don’t always have a precise meaning and people might misunderstand.

Euphemisms are a special type of idioms. We will talk about it tomorrow!
